Countdown to MVP Summit: Topic 2 - Codec support
« on: March 29, 2008, 10:26:28 AM »

Quote
As the MVP global summit nears - it's April 14-17 - I'm going to start several threads to gather our community's thoughts on different aspects of Zune.

I want to accurately represent the members of this forum, and our collective (although often differing) needs/desires/opinions.

To help organize myself, I'll start different MVP Summit threads on discussion areas that I expect to be involved in with the Zune team.

Note: I will be under NDA at the MVP summit, so will have to respect that in terms of what I can report back!

I welcome your thoughts. Thanks all..!

I'd really like to see .avi or .divx support. It would make syncing videos much shorter.

That would be insane (in a good way  Wink )!.

Cram as many codecs as possible...

I would even settle for codec support in the desktop client so it can convert/sync .avi and .mpg files encoded in divx/xvid.

Good point.  Having downgraded back to the 1.x software, I already have that support... but it would be good for 2.x.

For version 1.x, yes, but not for the new client.

I would love avi/divx support. I already converted a lot of my collection to avi (when I owned the zen vision m), and I would rather not have to waste the time of converting them to another format just to put them on the Zune.

Giving a set top box new codec support is easier than doing the same thing for a portable media player. The Zune can't just decode any format on the fly with a firmware update, so this would likely require all new hardware so that it doesn't eat through batteries like a hypoglycemic elephant.

- Does Zune device support JPEG XR (Microsoft's HD Photo) format?

- What is the reasoning behind the limited # of zoom levels on the Zune device?

1. Xbox added feature of Divx playback was a *software/firmware update*
2. Zen Vision:M have been playing Divx since Dec. 2005-January 2006
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/CreativeZVMPort#Internal_components

I dont think a TI chip with these specs http://www.arm.com/products/CPUs/ARM926EJ-S.html (I dont see any particular hardware decoder there) can do better decoding than a Freescale running at 400Mhz.

3. Rockbox have made Divx/Xvid playback an option on old DAPs. Like the iriver H3xx series from 4 years ago. These players have weaker CPUs and DSP than the Zune devices and can playback 15fps Divx/Xvid videos. Again, done by software.

So, why not Divx/Xvid on the Zune ?

Video:
Divx/Xvid and full MPEG4 support (no converting)

Pictures:
BITMAP pictures (.bmp)
GIF pictures (including animated GIFs)

Audio:
Ogg Vorbis
FLAC (lossless audio codec)

Supporting Ogg Vorbis and FLAC would guarantee the Zune support from the geeks and audiophiles.

I wouldn't even mind paying $5 or $10 for a special firmware update that adds DivX/Xvid/MPEG4 playback natively on the Zune (to account for royalty/licensing issues).
