Hey that battery life says 20 (audio) for the Zune 80, what gives?

edit:  It also says 5 hours for video!

Interesting. Maybe Amazon did have an official source for their battery life specs... Even if they did change.

Strange that both the Zune 4, Zune 8 and Zune 80 hold 25,000 pictures... Is that a software (database) maximum?

Don't get me wrong, I haven't taken 25,000 photos worthy of being placed on a portable device in my life.

But someone who's into porntraits.... They may want that kind of storage.

Yeah, that's possible.

MS should actually recall these brochures if the battery numbers are wrong.  Harder to compete with the Ipod when your audio battery life is advertised to be 10 hours less.

Cool, thanks for posting! I'll have to go check it out myself.

Gah, Microsoft! How could you print inaccurate battery information AND (hopefully) inaccurate photo storing information?! C'mon, guys; getting your specs right for your promo brochure shouldn't even be a question. Roll Eyes

I didn't notice that, but the big display shows the same thing.  I know it's hard to read but again it's from my cell.   Wink

If my math is right 4 is half of 8, right?   Smiley  So in theory shouldn't the 8 have exactly twice the 4 in everything.  In music and videos the specs more than double on the 8.

Oh well, I'm probably not getting a flash anyway.....well, not soon at least.

Actually this makes sense based on the Zune's "OS" taking up some of the storage capacity.

For example, if the OS takes up 300MB then on a 4GB device you'd be left with 3.7GB and on an 8GB device you'd be left with 7.7GB. 7.7GB is clearly more than twice 3.7GB (7.4GB).

12 Hrs video @ 308MB/Hr = 3696MB + 300MB(OS) = 3.996GB
25 Hrs video @ 308MB/Hr = 7700MB + 300MB(OS) = 8.000GB

Very true, I hadn't thought that far into it.

I don't know the reason behind the number. It is quite meaningless really because the number of photos you put in there is so variable. For instance ... if you have one of the latest Digital SLRs with > 12MB files you can't hope to put so many in there!

Interesting to note that have not mentioned the fact that the iPod's have the same issue. From apple.com link ...

80GB iPod classic ... Up to 20,000 songs, up to 25,000 photos, up to 100 hours of video ...
160GB iPod classic ... Up to 40,000 songs, up to 25,000 photos, up to 200 hours of video ...

I have over 25,000 photos but they won't fit even on a 160GB device! Anyone who has so many is unlikely to have them on a portable device ... they are very hard to find and classify as portable media devices don't do very well with JPEG metadata.

Both software programs convert the files to a device friendly size when sync'd. Last I heard, the Zune is 640x480 and the iPod is 720x480. So you really can't take advantage of the 12MB photos for viewing on either device. Again, I'm guessing the 25,000 photos is a database limitation.

However, on the iPod you could store 10,000+ 12MB photos on the hard drive for transporting which would be slightly faster and easier than copying those photos to 32 DVDs.

It's true that the devices handle Metadata poorly (they're not even that great for music), however, it's pretty easy to divide your photos into reasonably sized albums based on metadata before you sync. Of course, it would be nice if I could simply view all photos with the tags (Wife, Me and Vacation) on the fly.

I see the new display on target but it was a end cap display like the Ipods, they were in the back of the isle. But I think they will move it once the Zune starts to sell like hot cakes Smiley

Are you kidding me?
-Don't use a device for a purpose it is not well suited for.
-I would use it an emergency to save a dozen dozen pictures. Beyond that it's really bad idea ...

I have never wanted to carry so many photos with me. If I did I would rather use a very fast external drive [cheaper, faster and more reliable]. If I didn't have space for a external drive I would put them on my laptop but *never* on a media player ... what a waste of time!

I need to call my mom and tell her to remove the 4000+ photos from her 60GB iPod and she really needs to take back that iPod camera connector she uses on trips... Cause it definitely wasn't designed to store her camera's native photos.  Roll Eyes

And why, pray tell, is it poorly suited for it? I have been doing this for years with nary an issue. Either method runs the risk of a drive failure. It's actually cheaper to do it with the PMP, because I'm going to have the PMP anyway, and it's nice to have that feature. It's a nice way to make quick transfers to other computers as well (if you don't have a flash key on hand).
