New Zunes will sync DVD-quality video; why you should care
« on: October 07, 2007, 02:40:42 PM »

New Zune players will sync high-resolution video from your PC, and the Zune 80 will send that high-rez video to your television via the players' TV-out signal.

While the resolution of the Zune player displays are 320x240, the new players can store those higher-resolution video files without transcoding.

Specifically, the new Zune 80, Zune 4, and Zune 8 models will import 720x480 video at 30 frames per second (fps), or 720x576 video at 25 fps. (The two resolutions reflect the two standards for DVD video: NTSC (720x480) and PAL (720x576). And those videos can be in WMV, H.264, or MPEG-4 formats - all supported natively on the new Zune players.

The video out signal of the Zune 80 is 640x480 - implying that those widescreen DVDs are either getting side-cropped or letterboxed.

What does this mean to you? Two things: Convenience and speed in video syncing, as the new Zune players will accept a lot more common video formats and resolutions without the need for transcoding. And... much better video quality when you've connected your Zune to your TV via cables or a Home A/V dock.

Thanks to the Zune team for telling us this in our recent conference call, and for subsequent clarifications from ZuneInsider.

It's good since you won't have to convert every freaking video that you bring into the Zune software like you use to have to do.

As for video output well thats a feature that I don't plan on using too much, but I guess I'll see, I might end up using it a lot if I get bored with TV.

Thanks for the post, but I have a couple comments:

- How do you know that the flash Zunes will import full 720x480 resolution files if it doesn't have a TV out? I must have missed it somewhere.

- The Zune 80 actually outputs the full DVD quality video, not just 640x480 (as you said, 720x480 @30fps or 720x576 @25fps.)

I'm glad that the new 80 can finally do this; I was a bit disappointed when I saw that the 30 wasn't able to do anything higher than 320x240. I look forward to trying this out.  Grin

I got this info from the conference call I had this week with Microsoft's Zune team. I think Cesar's post corroborates it as well.

I hope you're right. Can you send me a source reference on that?

Update: wait, I see it now on ZuneInsider. At least, I *think* he's saying that the DVD-quality video files will be output *as they are* to TV-out.  If so, I need to update Zunerama's spec sheets.

I think I'll store my five favorite movies/TV eps for random hang out moments when someone hasn't had the utter joy of seeing one of them. Plug into TV and ta daaa!

I wouldn't mind more clarification on the Zune team's part as well. Too many unanswered, nit-picky questions, heh! It'll be a lot of fun digging into the nuances of the new Zune/software/firmware/zunesocial.net. Grin

The real reason you should care about the Zune 80's video out features...

They've already switched to component cables... This doesn't mean anything just yet. But the fact that the dock connector is now pinned for component video (Y, Pb, and Pr) - we are ready to go for HD. With iPod and Zune switching to component video cables, the future of online video entertainment just stepped up a notch.

Now that would be cool to have HD content right on your Zune and connecting it to your TV and watching the goodness.

720x480 @30fps
or
720x576 @25fps

Just for further clarification... You won't see much 720x576 @25fps in the US. That's the PAL format for UK, Australia, South America, etc. NTSC is 720x480 @30fps and is primarily US and Japan.

I would love to go into the details (about how in Europe the AC power is a 50Hz frequency which is what controlled the TV frame rates once upon a time. While in the US the 60Hz AC set our 30fps rate. Later when the US added color they had to change the timing to 29.97Hz to allow for the color subcarrier... We still call it 30fps, cause who wants to say 29.97Hz except me. None of that matters now days as the timing is all controlled digitally.) but I won't.

Evidence of the new Zunes going to PAL regions perhaps?
