J speaks
« on: October 04, 2007, 03:12:48 PM »

J Allard, Zune team overlord, spoke with Reuters today about Zune's present and future, including:

Wireless features. Allard makes a good case for why wireless sync is a more compelling feature than wireless song buying. Nonetheless, Zune wireless song buying is coming and is just "a matter of when".

iPhone. Allard points out why, for him, iPhone is not the best iPod ever. Excerpt: "Not if I canít skip without taking it out of my pocket. Not if I canít mute it without taking it out of my pocket."

Zune Phone? The Zune team's focus is on music, and sees "a lot of runway" in redefining the music experience. He implies, though, that phone functionality is on his mind, at least in a long-term way.

Games. He notes platform challenges, and low customer satisfaction with how games have so far been implemented. The Zune "isn't playing Halo 3 anytime soon", but he points out how the XNA gaming architecture offers potential for implementing games that are portable across various hardware form factors.

It's safe to say, I think, that Microsoft is going to push hard on expanding the music experience before broadening into phone or game functionality.

Who knows though? Microsoft surprised us this week. It might surprise us again.

I already posted this review, but the future of the Zune is very promising, we just need to give them some time to give us all the goodies Smiley

I think if Microsoft made a Portable XBOX, it would blow away anything iPod could ever release for some time. The Zune needs to take full advantage of all Microsoft's products (Media Center, XBOX, Zune, Vista).

How to:
   Pause the music
Using the iPhone headphones you can squeeze the mic once to pause the music. Squeeze it again to resume.

  Skip a track
Using the iPhone headphones you can double squeeze the mic to skip to the next track.

Shall I place your order Mr. Allard?

The microphone attached to the iPhone earphones has a button that allows you to fast forward and pause without removing it from your pocket.

And what if you don't use the crappy included earbuds?  Suppose I use some random headphones I bought for $100...then what?

Then you picked the perfect pricepoint as the V-Moda Vibe Duo for iPhone, one of the best pairs of earphones you can get for $100, now has the same microphone/button configuration.
