« on: October 02, 2007, 04:36:12 PM »

As the news breaks officially tonight (stating at 9pm Pacific), we'll be capturing the complete specs of the new Zunes, and comparing them to Apple's comparable products in the side-by-side tables below:

Flash Zune vs Nano:

How do you know that the news conference will be at 9pm pst tonight?  Are you just guessing or has there been a formal announcement?

How do you already know the resolution, format support, etc.?  Or are those just assumptions at this point.

Those are all guesses - re the resolution and format support.

I don't expect those to change, but will update them as new information arrives.

Both pages have been updated with the information released so far.

Let me know if you catch any errors in the tables!

I have a call tomorrow where I should get answers that will help fill in the few TBDs that remain in the tables.

Just  wondering, I didn't read about gapless playback in the new features...did they confirm it and I miss it cause I'm looking at your table now and I see it listed for both.

Good comparison Harvey.

I have one thing to nitpick. This has nothing to do with you, it has to do with the industry.

When you list Capacity for Songs, Video, and Pictures - you're really just playing with numbers.

If you take a set of media in formats that both devices can play (MP3, MPEG-4, etc) the capacity will be exactly the same from 80GB to 80GB device. Capacity is just a marketing term.

If you wanted a real difference and to be a trend setter  Wink ... Perhaps instead of those capacity fields use a field noting the amount of available space after OS, etc.

I agree, those capacity figures are not very meaningful - all you need to do is change assumptions about bitrates and you can make the numbers swing widely.

I meant to indicate that both players support a Lossless codec. I used the term "Lossless playback" and that really doesn't make sense.

I'm going to add Lossless among the supported codec and remove the row that is labeled "Lossless playback".

Finally found a pic with the Zune80's back. Looks like its NOT glossy metal. Looks like a nice dull matte finish. whew.
