Zune pre-launch party
« on: October 14, 2006, 02:09:21 PM »

Zunerama has been invited to a "hands on experience" pre-launch party for Zune, coming up in the next couple of weeks.

So, forum members: what do you want us to find out for you?

Send us your unanswered questions, and any "tests" you'd like us to try while we're there. Also any particular photos you'd like us to take - we're bringing camera and video equipment.

It's an all day affair, and we'll have the opportunity to play with Zunes and talk to Microsoft folks as well.

Find out how long it takes to transfer an audio file - eg an average-sized music track.

Also, can you transfer a full album, and how long does that take?

I know this is probably a no, but I want a damage test. I remember seeing a video of someone throwing a creative zen v across the room and it was undamaged. I just want to know if I drop my zune by accident will it shatter into a million pieces?
ask them if they have done any drop tests? if so, will it be safe from a normal slip out of your pocket drop?

Great idea! And good thinking. Better yet, do it with both an iPod and a Zune - and compare results...

Honestly I don't know, we received an invitation from Microsoft's marketing firm with a few details about the event, and a promise that we'd hear more about it in a few days.

I think from some of the posts and emails that we receive that some of the Microsoft Zune team members are occasional visitors to the Zunerama blog and forum. So maybe that recommendation came from them.

Anyway I'm excited and hope to learn a lot at the event.

A demonstration of the Digital DJ feature would be sweet.

Nymbis raises a great point. I have not heard anything recently from Microsoft about the "DJ" feature - the news about it came out early, in the Toshiba FCC documents.

Has anyone seen evidence that it's going to be in the first Zune player?

In any case, I'll be sure to find out at the pre-launch event. Thanks Nymbis.

I think they've said that it will only come with Z2Z sharing when first released, but that it will be a feature added on later through a firmware upgrade.

As for my questions:

1.Will Zune act as a hard drive when plugged in allowing a drag and drop way of managing things (I hate installing software I don't need).
2.Can we expect to see games on the first Zune player perhaps through firmware upgrades?
3.Will there be conversion software included with the Zune that will convert files to the correct format (ex: Divx movie to Mpeg4), or will I have to do that on my own?
4.What can we expect as far as battery life, will it be about the same as the iPod video?

Thanks for taking our questions  Grin

SHUFFLE FEATURE:

try to find out how the shuffle algorithm works. Meaning,

1) select a playlist/genre/artist and hit play....and see which songs starts out first

2) ...then select another playlist/genre/artist and play

3) then go back to the original selection in step 1 and see what song plays first.

i would like to see if the shuffle really shuffles each and every time.

FINGERPRINTS:

i think the Zune has a matte finish but could you test out to see if finger prints are a problem on the unit....and screen?

STARTUP time:
it takes a while for the vision:M to start up and begin playing and i was wondering if you could test out this feature. and see if they have an auto-off if it is left on pause too much

Will the Zune have a setting to change the horizontal mode to a left handed configuration, instead of having the controls on the right as in every picture/video out there?
