caught in a rainstorm
« on: June 21, 2007, 03:45:38 PM »

hello, i'm an active member on zunescene, but seeing as the server is down, i'm turning to you guys for help
please help me in any way you can
but let me explain
i recently went to the beach and was caught in a really bad rainstorm
my zune did get wet, but it didn't look too bad, so i just let it sit for a few days in my father's computer desk where it is very hot trying to dry it out
well, just now i finally tried turning it on, and it won't
i know its probably broken
and i imagine rain as being an "Act of God" so the warranty won't cover it
is there anything i can do to fix it?
please please offer any kind of suggestion, i need your help badly

I read in an article you can submerge your wet device into uncooked rice. Rice absorbs all possible humidity that is probably disallowing a component to work properly. I believe it was engadget i will look for the link.

Well the last thing you want to do is turn it on because the electricity with the water is what ruins it other than the corrosion... Your best bet.. In my opinion.. is to not try and turn it on, it may already be too late, open it up and let it dry thoroughly.. and I mean thoroughly, no harm in letting it get too dry. I left my iriver (hmmm RIVER) in my track bag when i went for a run and it rained and I didn't get back to it, it was thoroughly soaked and i tried to turn it on first thing, turned on for a second then went off, but I took it apart as much as I could and let it dry out for 5 days and now it works fine. Rain is considered an act of god, as is dropping it in a pool is an accident, here's how I see it, it's not under warranty, and it may be broken, so you might as well open it up and let it dry more. Perhaps you should have tried comming for help before turning it on, but no point on dwelling in the past. Best of luck to you.

If you're not comfortable taking the zune apart, don't do it.  You could do more harm than good.  If it's just water, it will dry without taking it apart.

My suggestion would be to let it sit for a week in an open area, where the air can circulate around it, not in a drawer.

If you didn't notice it coming on then going off like scoutflyer's iriver did, it may be that your battery has lost it's charge.  That would actually be a good thing if it wasn't dry when you tried to turn it on.  After a week, try connecting it to charge the battery.

Good luck.  You should hang out here more.  The people are pretty friendly!

Wow this beats Coot66 My Zune went swimming story.

BTW was your Zune in a case?

I hope your Zune survives just like Coot's Zune did when it went swimming.

Just say that you don't believe in God.  Or, just lie to them and say that all of a sudden it stopped working.

if it's anything like phones, there's probably a moisture sensitive sticker on the inside.

You can't reverse sync the preloaded stuff, but you can do the registry hack to view the data in my computer and copy it from there.

You could download the preloaded stuff from here at one point.  Don't know where that thread is now, but do some searching and you'll find it.
