Hmm... could this be possible?
« on: March 14, 2007, 10:41:47 PM »

Okay, take any FM Zune transmitter and two Zunes. Put the transmitter to one Zune and put the other on the radio function. Could it feasibly be possible to use the transmitter to play music on one zune while the other tunes in and listens?

nymbis, I think you've uncovered a way to stream your tunes to other nearby Zunes. Sort of like the "DJ mode" that was hinted at early on.

I agree, there's no reason this would not work, as long as the one Zune had the FM transmitter accessory.

Good thought!!

These itty-bitty FM transmitters are designed to use very little power and so they have a short range. If they were more powerful they would be bigger and draw more power and cost more ... so designers do have to make tradeoffs! Besides, you don't want your FM transmitter to be too powerful because of interference from other FM transmitters.

The FM transmitters works best when using transmit frequencies away from powerful local FM stations. Example. if 92.5 FM is a powerful local station then the FM transmitter is too weak for for 92.3-92.5-92.7 range. For best results find frequency gaps in your local area. Autoseek may not be reliable. In my local area showed 87.7 FM and 87.9 FM work the best ... there is no powerful local radio station in that range!

Interesting side-note: In my local area there are a couple of traffic intersections where local FM station receptions is poor (I suspect because of high number of electric transmission lines.) At these intersections cellular reception also is weaker and I was not surprised to notice that the FM transmitter works poorly as well.

I've been doing this for awhile now.....sending my songs over the radio waves to another zune.....it didnt work really well until I modified my fm transmitter with a wireless router antenna........

now it works across the room...up to 20 feet away!!!

Jerry, I wasn't exactly sure.. thus I posted. Id rather broadcast my music for free than have to send it and keep resending it.  Hey ryango, any chance of you making a guide as how to make that modified transmitter or pming me the details? That looks quite nice.

It's called 'a hack' though its not really and if you search google news for it you can find it, you have to open it up and basically sauder on an antennae to the inside and drill a hole to the outside.

Haha, thanks scoutflyer. Being 17, I know that it was a direct hack. I don't think they are selling fm transmitters with a wireless router antennas. I was asking for more detailed instructions (such as what to sauder where, and what not) as Im not that well versed in component construction.

Someone should make a super slim fm transmitter just for this purpose.

Something else I use the FM receiver for...

When I want to watch horror movies while my wife is sleeping (so as to not wake her up what with all the screaming, and the pain, and with the bleeding...) - I attach an FM transmitter to our television, and tune into the frequency with my Zune.

Pretty handy that way, too!
