Greatest-Ever Driving Playlist
« on: November 25, 2008, 10:53:56 AM »

I love playing my Zune in my car. Especially while on long drives, there is nothing that beats a well-chosen driving playlist, pumped through my car stereo, and cranked up just a little too loud.

But I need your help! I have a major, multi-day driving trip coming up in January. And I want to assemble the Greatest-Ever Driving Playlist, to help me roll through those many miles.

So here's my challenge to you: Give me your suggested tracks for the Greatest-Ever Driving Playlist. If you suggest five tracks or more, you'll be eligible to win a limited edition Zune T-shirt. (I'll post a pic soon but, trust me, it's cool.) You can enter as often as you like. The winner will be selected arbitrarily and capriciously by me. Contest closes December 15th!

So, drivers: start your engines and get those playlist suggestions in! My driving companions and I thank you.

No specific recommendations on playlists.  For really long trips, I've found that comedians (Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy, etc) and Radio Dramas (not Audio Books) work the best for me.  There's either something funny being said that keeps me awake and chuckling or the story/dramatizations are good enough to keep me involved and awake.  I know that there are comedians available in the Zune Marketplace, but not sure about Radio Dramas.  If available, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Star Wars (Episodes 4-6) are all available in Drama form and pretty well done.  If traveling with children, there are some pretty good series for them as well.  And Dirk Maggs dramatized several super-heroes for BBC Radio.  Add in some Terry Pratchett and Doug Adams and you've got some great series to listen to that can consume several hours easily.

No real recommendations on music - I just can't think of any major albums I'd load up for a long trip.  I'd probably have some handy to keep my kid amused, but don't have any favorites for myself other than the Blues Brothers for road trips.

My suggestions are (I know I have strange tastes in music):
     1) I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) - by The Proclaimers
     2) Everybody Have Fun Tonight - by Wang Chung
     3) Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - by Cyndi Lauper
     4) Relax - by Frankie Goes To Hollywood
     5) Somebody's Watching Me - by Rockwell
I think corny 80's songs are always great for road trips.

Zune Rules!

A good drive list consists of a combo of talk and harmony.

You need a nice balance of some good audio books/podcasts and a 50+ set of songs to kick you off and finish you out. In the middle is where the audio books/podcasts makes the time melt away.

Here's some of my favorites in my list of songs I use for Road Trips:

AD/DC - Shoot to Thrill
Ben Folds - Zak and Sara
Closer to Free - Bodeans
Our Lives - The Calling
John Mayer - Stop This Train
Radiohead - No surprises
Van Halen - Panama
The Beatles - Free As a Bird
Spoon - The Book I Write
Jimmy Eat World - The World You Love
Diablo Rojo - Rodrigo y Gabriela
Make Me Over - Lifehouse
Viva la Vida - Coldplay
Better Than Ezra - Speeding Up to Slow Down
The Ramones - My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down
Led Zeppelin - Rock and Roll
Deep Purple - Highway Star
John Mayer - Free Fallin'
Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes
Vampire Weekend - Mansard Roof
The Clash - I Fought the Law
The Raconteurs - Rich Kid Blues
John Lennon - Imagine
Ray Lamontagne - Within You
Bryan Adams - Summer of 69'
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
Vega 4 - Life Is Beautiful
