Mystery Zune: knock-off or a factory reject?

    by Harvey Chute

    zune graphic

We now have photographs of the mystery Zune that turned up in Germany this week.

The Zune 8GB, purchased from an eBay seller, arrived in a non-standard box, and the Zune itself has some anomalies.

Its color is slightly different than the standard lipstick-red color. The laser etching on the back is stamped lower than on standard Zunes.

The box looks like a poor attempt at passing a Zune knock-off as the real thing. But from looking closer at the pictures, I'm guessing that this Zune originated as a factory defect - that somehow found its way outside the factory walls.

What do you think? You can see more photos here.

    Zune on the road: Montréal

    by Harvey Chute

    zune graphic

On the road again this week, in Quebec with my oldest daughter. Back when I followed hockey closely, I was a loyal Habs fan. It was great to pick up this jersey in the club's home town.

Meanwhile in the forums, our members debate the best player for a new Zuner to buy...

And, we puzzle over an overseas used Zune that was shipped in a weird box...

And the Canadiens? They lost a close one to the Flyers on Monday, so are now traliing 2-1 in that playoff series.

    Red 80s are rolling out

    by Harvey Chute

    zune graphic

The red Zune 80GB must be the most eye-pleasing of all the Zune player versions.

Up 'til now, the only place you could get a red 80 was through Microsoft's Zune Originals site.

That's changing, as Cesar from ZuneInsider tells us that red 80s will soon be available in retail stores.

A few may have leaked out already. Seen one yet?

P.S. We have three Zune giveaways underway now... no red 80s unfortunately, but we do have a Zune 30GB, a Kicker Zune stereo, and another of our members-only giveaways. See them all in our giveaway board.

    Your personal song memory

    by Harvey Chute

    zune graphic

While music is All About The Social - I don't need to tell you that, right? - it's also of course deeply intimate and individual.

I'm reminded of that in our current contest, where we ask you to tell us about a song that means something personal to you.

As of this moment we have 140 responses - some touching, some funny, some a little naughty, many of them close to the heart.

The winner, chosen randomly, receives a sweet ZK500 Zune stereo.

The drawing's one week from Monday. If you've got a special song from your past, tell us about it and you just might win!

CNET Editor abandons Zune, citing knotted headphone cords

    by Harvey Chute

While I am a Zune enthusiast, I have respect for Apple. I acknowledge that a reasonable person can look at competing features and make the personal decision to choose iPod over Zune.

If you are looking for such an argument, though, I would not put much stock behind CNET editor Molly Wood's 5 reasons that Zune is "dead to her".

Some of her points have merit - for example, Zune's issues with metadata handling. But much of her frustration seems to come from not understanding Zune sync, and with - get this - her problems in untangling Zune's headphone cords.

A more useful CNET article would have explored - and perhaps even analyzed or explained - Zune's sync to its readers. Yes, it does operate differently from iTunes syncing. But it's not much of an adjustment to understand that and, for some of us, to prefer Zune's sync behavior.

She mentions that she hadn't plugged her Zune in for a couple of months, so I'm guessing some of her problems are simply due to her unfamiliarity with the player and its software.

And tangled headphones? Please. The inclusion of that "flaw" smacks of someone trying a little too hard to bring that list of Zune gripes up to a nice round number of five.

For a point-by-point deconstruction of her argument - both pro and con - see our string of posts in this lively forum thread.

    Zune to support Audible files

    by Harvey Chute

    zune graphic

There certainly seems to be a calling for it.

And now, Audible is reporting that Zune will support its audiobook format, later this year.

Audible is communicating this in emails, including this one to Paul Thurrott.

Something to look forward to for audiobook fans.

Thanks to Endless for the tip.
