Zune player sales down 54%

A dismal report for Zune in Microsoft’s most recent quarterly earnings report: Zune player sales in the fourth quarter of 2008 were down 54% from the previous year.

Microsoft only did a minor player upgrade this past fall, which didn’t result in the buzz that erupted the previous year when they first released the Zune 80 and the flash players.

While their focus on software appears to be reaping dividends - with over a million new Zune Social members this past year - this is a tough hit on their player sales.

And during a time when Microsoft is actively cutting costs and personnel - including the early retirement of our good friend and ZuneInsider Cesar Menendez - this is serious news for Zune.
