Zune 3.0: report from Day 1

16 September, 2008 (23:11) | zune news | By: Harvey Chute

Our boards have been buzzing today - as our members check out Zune software 3.0. In fact, we hit an all-time high this evening, when 1,300 people were simultaneously in Zunerama’s forums.

Here are some more-or-less random reports from Day 1:

  • You can once again get a 14-day trial Zune Pass - an offering we haven’t seen since the first-generation Zune release.
  • XNA Studio has now been released in beta, which enables you to load additional Zune games beyond the pre-installed games.
  • You can download selected TV episodes for free from Zune Marketplace. This is part of an NBC promotion and includes The Office, 30 Rock, Battlestar Galactica, Psych, Monk, In Plain Sight, Heroes, Eureka, and Top Design.
  • You can now order the Zune 120GB from Zune Originals, with art and text engravings.
  • You can get a free audiobook, and a 30-day free trial from Audible, for syncing audiobooks to your Zune.
  • Among possible issues with the new release, we’ve seen reports of slowness in panning around zoomed-in photos, syncing friends seems to be using more space, and the Zune 30 equalizer seems to get turned off when you close one of the built-in Zune games.
  • People are expressing Thumbs Up about new 3.0 features like MixView and Now Playing.
  • And, Zunerama is giving away a Zune 120GB player! Sign up here. We draw our winner on September 30.
